The 2026/27 Betway Premiership kicks off on Saturday 1 August 2026, and it starts with something South African football has not had in nearly a decade: a genuine title race with a defending champion who is not Mamelodi Sundowns.
Orlando Pirates go into the season as champions after winning the 2025/26 title by a single point — their first league championship in 14 years, and the end of Sundowns' run of eight consecutive titles. Sixteen clubs, thirty matchdays, two newly promoted sides making their top-flight debuts, and a league that finished last season separated by one point at the top.

Key Dates for 2026/27
The PSL confirmed the calendar in a circular from acting CEO Mato Madlala, and it represents a deliberate change of habit: the league starts with league football rather than with the MTN8.

The season concludes in May 2027. There is no mid-season interruption this time — last season carried an extended break for the December-to-January AFCON in Morocco, but the next edition runs in June–July 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. A cleaner calendar means fewer fixture pile-ups and less rotation chaos, which matters more for betting than it sounds. Congested schedules are where team-news reading beats form reading.

The 16 Teams
Fourteen clubs return. Two arrive.
Returning: Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, Golden Arrows, Polokwane City, Durban City, Stellenbosch, Siwelele, Richards Bay, TS Galaxy, Chippa United and Marumo Gallants.
Promoted: Kruger United and Milford FC — both making their first appearance in the South African top flight.
Relegated after 2025/26: Magesi FC and Orbit College.
The two debutants
Kruger United sealed automatic promotion on 2 May 2026 as champions of the Motsepe Foundation Championship, winning the second tier with 62 points from 30 games — eight clear of the next side. They play at Mbombela Stadium and open at home to Kaizer Chiefs, which is about as public a debut as a promoted club can get.
Milford FC came up through the promotion/relegation playoffs, topping the mini-table ahead of Magesi and Cape Town City, confirmed on 13 June 2026. The KwaZulu-Natal club is owned and coached by Xanti Pupuma, and its reward is an opening trip to Orlando Stadium to face the champions.
A betting note on both: neither club has a single match of top-flight data. Prices on promoted sides in their first weeks lean heavily on second-tier form and reputation, and the market genuinely does not know what it is pricing yet. That cuts both ways — it is where mispricing lives, and it is also where confident opinions are least justified. Wait for evidence rather than assuming either promotion or relegation form carries over.

Three Betting Angles From Those Numbers
Rather than tell you who will win, here is what the table above actually supports. All of it is checkable against the same source.
One: draws are the PSL's defining feature, and the market still under-rates them. Look at the draw column. Polokwane City drew 13 of 30 — 43% of their season. Sekhukhune drew 11, Stellenbosch 10, Kaizer Chiefs 9. Across the top nine, draws outnumber the gap between mid-table clubs. In leagues where a third or more of matches finish level, the draw and double chance markets carry value that a bettor arriving from the Premier League will systematically overlook. Two: this is a low-scoring league, and some fixtures are extremely low-scoring. Polokwane City scored 21 and conceded 21 in 30 matches — 1.4 goals per game across both ends. Kaizer Chiefs managed 33 goals in 30 games while finishing third. Only the top two cleared 50 goals. When two low-output sides meet, the under markets and correct-score lines in the 0–0 to 1–1 range are where the realistic outcomes sit.
Three: Pirates' defence was the story, not their attack. Sundowns actually scored within one goal of Pirates (57 to 58). The title was decided at the other end: 12 conceded versus 21. Nine goals over a season, one point in the table. For betting, that points at clean-sheet and both-teams-to-score markets in Pirates matches rather than at the win line, where the price will already be short.
And the honest caveat: these are last season's numbers. Squads turn over heavily in South African football, Kaizer Chiefs start under new coach Fernando Da Cruz, and two clubs in the division have no top-flight record at all. Treat the table as a starting prior that the first six weeks will update, not as a forecast.
Venues and the Altitude Question
The PSL's geography is unusually varied and it shows up in matches. Highveld venues — Loftus Versfeld, FNB, Orlando, Mbombela, Royal Bafokeng — sit well above sea level; coastal grounds like Moses Mabhida, King Zwelithini, uMhlathuze, Chatsworth, Danie Craven and Nelson Mandela Bay do not. Coastal sides travelling up for a midweek fixture at altitude, and highveld sides playing in coastal humidity, are both real factors that the schedule creates repeatedly.
Winter fixtures on the highveld also mean firm, dry surfaces early in the season, which tends to favour quicker transition football over patient build-up.
