How We Review & Rate Betting Sites
Every bookmaker on Bet AFR carries a rating out of five and a place in our rankings. This page explains how those numbers are earned, so you can judge for yourself whether our verdicts are fair. We don't rank on bonus size, and we don't sell positions — the order is decided by the six factors below.
Affiliate disclosure: Bet AFR is free to read because some links to bookmakers are affiliate links. If you sign up through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes a bookmaker's score or position — we rate operators the same way whether or not we have a commercial arrangement with them, and we publish the full method below so you can hold us to it.
The six factors we score
We score every betting site against the same six factors. Licensing and reliable rand payouts carry the most weight — a bookmaker that can't pay you reliably will never rank highly here, however big its welcome offer looks.
1. Licensing & safety (highest weight)
We only list bookmakers that hold a valid South African betting licence — issued by a provincial authority such as the Western Cape Gambling & Racing Board, or recognised by the National Gambling Board. A real licence means your funds are protected, your bets are honoured, and there is a complaints route that works. We record each operator's licence authority and number; without one, a site is never listed.
2. ZAR banking & payout speed (highest weight)
A bookmaker is only as good as its cashier. We check that you can deposit and withdraw in rands without forced currency conversion, and we record the real payout speed for the methods South Africans actually use — instant EFT, card, vouchers and verified bank transfers.
3. Odds value & market depth
We compare prices across the markets South Africans actually bet — PSL and European football, rugby, cricket and Lucky Numbers — and reward bookmakers that consistently post competitive odds and a deep range of markets. A wide, fairly priced Lucky Numbers range counts for as much as a deep PSL coupon.
4. Bonuses & fair terms
A big welcome figure means nothing if the terms are punishing. We read the full rules — turnover requirements, minimum odds, maximum-stake limits and expiry windows — and reward offers that are genuinely clearable by an ordinary punter. Fair, readable terms score better than a larger offer buried in restrictions.
5. Live betting & mobile app
Most South Africans bet on a phone. We test in-play markets, live cash-out and the betslip on mobile data, scoring load speed, data usage and how cleanly the app and cashier run on a smaller screen on both Android and iOS, rewarding sites that work well on a modest handset and a patchy connection.
6. Support & responsible-gambling tools
We contact support with real questions and time the replies. We also confirm that deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion and reality checks are easy to find and easy to switch on — these are a legal requirement in South Africa, not a nice-to-have.
How the score is reached
The six factors are combined into the rating out of five you see on each review and on our best betting sites in South Africa page, with licensing and payouts weighted most heavily. Because those two carry the most weight, a bookmaker can have an excellent app and a generous bonus and still rank mid-table if its payouts are slow or its licence position is unclear. The rating reflects how well a site serves a South African player over time, not how loud its marketing is.
We test, we don't guess
Our verdicts come from hands-on checks, not press releases. We open accounts, place real bets, request withdrawals and read the terms in full. Odds and bonus figures are recorded and sourced at the time of writing, and we note when each review was last verified. Offers change often, so always confirm the current terms on the operator's own site before you deposit.
The rankings can change
The order is never fixed. Operators adjust their odds, fix problems or let standards slip, and our list moves with them — we re-check it regularly. If a bookmaker stops paying players fairly, weakens its terms or loses its licence, it drops or is removed, regardless of any commercial relationship. Questions about a particular rating?
