Responsible Gambling in South Africa

Last updated: 15 May 2026

VELD.co.za is an editorial site. We are not a gambling operator and we never accept bets. Everything on this site is intended for adults aged 18 and over, and we believe that betting should always be entertainment — never a way to make money or escape from problems.

If gambling has stopped being fun for you, or for someone you care about, you can speak to a free, confidential counsellor today.

Free, confidential help is available right now

National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP)

📞 0800 006 008 — toll-free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 💬 SMS the word HELP to 076 675 0710 🌐 responsiblegambling.org.za — South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF)

Calls are free from any South African network. No personal information is required to talk to a counsellor.

1. What responsible gambling means

Responsible gambling is the idea that betting should be a paid-for form of entertainment, just like going to the cinema, and never a source of income. In practice, that means:

  • Only betting money you can afford to lose.
  • Setting a time limit and a money limit before you start.
  • Treating wins as luck, not skill — and never chasing losses.
  • Keeping gambling separate from rent, school fees, groceries and savings.
  • Stopping if you are upset, drunk, sleep-deprived or otherwise not making clear decisions.

If any of those rules feel hard to follow, it is a sign that gambling may have started to take more than it is giving back.

2. Warning signs of problem gambling

Problem gambling is a recognised behavioural addiction. It can affect anyone — old or young, rich or poor, occasional punter or daily player. Watch out for these signs in yourself or someone close to you:

  • Time: spending more hours betting than you planned, or thinking about your next bet during work, school or family time.
  • Money: depositing more than your monthly budget, using credit cards, loans or asking friends for "just one" loan to keep betting.
  • Chasing: trying to win back losses with bigger bets or higher-risk markets ("the next one will fix it").
  • Hiding: lying to a partner, family member or employer about how much time or money you spend gambling.
  • Mood: feeling restless, irritable or depressed when you are not gambling, or only feeling "alive" while a bet is running.
  • Escape: using gambling to forget stress, conflict, grief, anxiety or financial worry.
  • Relationships: missing family events, arguments at home, or friends pulling away.
  • Sleep, work, health: disturbed sleep, performance drop at work, skipping meals or medication, or using alcohol/drugs alongside gambling.

If you ticked two or more of those, please talk to someone today using the contacts at the top of this page.

3. Self-exclusion — how to take a real break

South African gambling law allows players to self-exclude from licensed operators. A self-exclusion order is a legally binding instruction that you may not gamble for a minimum period.

How it works in South Africa:

  • The minimum period is six (6) months.
  • During that period, you may not take part in any gambling activity at the licensed operators covered by the order — online betting, retail bookmaker shops, casinos and Limited Pay-Out Machines (LPMs).
  • The NRGP provides free counselling to the excluded person and their immediate family for the duration of the self-exclusion order.
  • The order can only be lifted after the six-month period has run, and only after the player can show that they have attended counselling sessions with an NRGP treatment professional.

To self-exclude:

  1. Through the NRGP: call 0800 006 008 and ask to be put through to a counsellor who can guide you through the self-exclusion process and arrange counselling.
  2. Through a specific bookmaker: every licensed South African bookmaker is legally required to operate a self-exclusion process. Log in to your bookmaker account, look for Responsible Gambling in the account / settings menu, and choose "Self-exclude". You may also e-mail their support team.
  3. Through your provincial gambling board: every province has a gambling regulator with a self-exclusion register. Search for "[province name] gambling board self-exclusion" or follow the links at responsiblegambling.org.za.

Self-exclusion is one of the strongest, most effective interventions for problem gambling. Use it without hesitation.

4. Player protection tools available at licensed operators

Even without going as far as a six-month self-exclusion, every licensed South African bookmaker is required to offer player-protection tools. Look for them under Responsible Gambling or Account Limits on Hollywoodbets, Betway South Africa, SuperSportBet, Bet.co.za, Supabets, YesPlay and similar operators.

  • Deposit limits — cap the total amount you can deposit per day, week or month.
  • Stake / wager limits — cap the maximum size of a single bet.
  • Loss limits — automatically stop your account from accepting more bets once net losses for the period reach a set figure.
  • Session / time limits — automatically log you out after a chosen amount of time.
  • Reality checks — pop-up reminders showing how long you have been playing and your net result for the session.
  • Cool-off periods — short-term breaks (often 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days), shorter than a full self-exclusion.
  • Account closure — permanent closure of your account on request.

If you cannot find these tools in your bookmaker account, ask their support agents directly — they are required by South African law to offer them.

5. Help for family members and friends

Problem gambling rarely affects only one person. If a partner, parent, child or close friend is struggling:

  • Call 0800 006 008 yourself — NRGP counsellors are trained to support family members, not only the gambler.
  • Do not lend money to cover gambling losses. Loans tend to keep the cycle going.
  • Avoid blame and shame language ("you're weak", "you'll never change"). Stick to facts and to the impact on your shared life.
  • Take care of your own well-being. Family therapists, community support groups and your local clinic can all help.
  • If safety is a concern (anger, domestic violence, suicidal talk), contact:
    • SADAG Suicide Crisis Helpline: 0800 567 567 (free, 24/7).
    • SAPS emergency: 10111.

You do not have to fix this alone.

6. National and international support organisations

South Africa

  • SARGF — South African Responsible Gambling Foundation — runs the NRGP and the national 0800 006 008 helpline.
  • National Gambling Board — the national regulator and source of consumer guidance on licensed operators.
  • Provincial gambling boards (Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State, Northern Cape) — each maintains its own self-exclusion register.
  • SADAG — South African Depression and Anxiety Group: 0800 567 567 or sadag.org — for the mental health side of problem gambling.

International

  • BeGambleAware — leading international site with free educational tools and self-assessment quizzes.
  • Gambling Therapy — global multilingual support, online groups and live chat.
  • Gamblers Anonymous — 12-step peer support groups; check the website for meetings in South Africa.
