In-depth guide

Last updated: July 2026. Season data below is the completed 2025/26 Betway Premiership.

Orlando Pirates are the reigning Betway Premiership champions — their fifth league title and their first since 2011/12, won on 69 points to end Mamelodi Sundowns' run of eight consecutive championships. They begin the defence at home to newly promoted Milford on 1 August 2026.

The way they won it matters more for betting than the fact that they won it. Pirates were not a runaway attack — Sundowns scored 57 to their 58. They won it with a defence that conceded 12 goals in 30 matches.

Club Overview

Founded in 1937 in Orlando, Soweto, Pirates — the Buccaneers, the Bucs — are one of the two giants of South African football alongside city rivals Kaizer Chiefs. They remain the only South African club to have won the CAF Champions League, in 1995. Home matches are at Orlando Stadium (capacity 40,000), a tight, steep and genuinely intimidating ground.

What the 2025/26 Numbers Actually Say

We computed these splits ourselves from the full season results grid; the totals reconcile exactly with the official final table.

PlayedW-D-LGoals forGoals againstPoints per game
Home1510-3-22552.20
Away1511-3-13372.40

Pirates were better away from home than at Orlando Stadium. That is rare, and it is the single most useful fact on this page. They won eleven of fifteen on the road and lost once, scoring 33 away goals against 25 at home.

Two more figures stand out:

What That Means for Betting

The numbers point in a consistent direction, and it is not the obvious one.

The away price is where the value historically sat. Markets instinctively shade a big club up at home and down on the road. Pirates' record inverted that. It is worth checking whether bookmakers have adjusted this season — if away prices still carry a travel discount, that is a gap.

Both-teams-to-score "No" fits the profile better than overs. A side that concedes five at home across a season and keeps clean sheets in two-thirds of its matches makes BTTS Yes a hard sell. That 27% BTTS rate is among the lowest in the league.

Be careful with heavy handicaps at home. Pirates won ten of fifteen at Orlando but drew three and lost two, and 25 home goals in 15 matches is solid rather than overwhelming. The away scoring record supports a handicap far better than the home one.

The honest caveat: this is one completed season, and squads turn over heavily in South African football. Treat it as a starting prior that the opening weeks will update, not as a settled read.

2026/27 Outlook

Pirates open at home to Milford, one of two top-flight debutants, then travel to AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida on 12 August. Defending a title is a different task from chasing one, and the margin last season was a single point.

The question the season will answer is whether that defensive record was a system or a moment. Twelve goals conceded in thirty is exceptional by any league's standards and difficult to repeat.

Where to Bet on Orlando Pirates

Pirates are among the most heavily traded clubs in South African football, so every licensed operator prices them deeply — 1X2, handicaps, goal lines, scorers and bet builders. Because the market is liquid, gaps between bookmakers are small on the headline 1X2 and wider on derivative markets.

Hollywoodbets carries the broadest PSL market depth of our licensed partners. For a full comparison see our best betting sites in South Africa page; every operator we list holds a South African provincial licence, which you can check against our licence register.

Are Orlando Pirates better at home or away? Away, on last season's evidence. Pirates took 2.40 points per game on the road against 2.20 at home, winning eleven of fifteen away matches and scoring 33 away goals to 25 at home.

Do Orlando Pirates matches have a lot of goals? No. Only 40% of their matches went over 2.5 goals and just 27% saw both teams score, despite Pirates being the league's top scorers. They tend to win controlled, low-scoring games.
