Over a 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, Stellenbosch will cover 37,570 km getting to their fifteen away fixtures and home again. Kaizer Chiefs will cover 12,987 km. That is 2.9 times the distance, in the same league, for the same thirty matches.

Nobody appears to have computed this. So we did, from stadium coordinates and a great-circle formula, and the full coordinate table and distance matrix are published below so you can check every number.

The Headline: One Club Is in a Different Competition

The single most telling number on this page is not the total. It is this:

Stellenbosch's shortest away trip of the season is 844 km. That is longer than the average away trip of every other club in the league. The next-highest average belongs to Chippa United at 699 km. For Stellenbosch there is no easy fixture, no short midweek hop, no bus trip that gets the squad home the same night. Every one of their fifteen away trips clears 500 km. Kaizer Chiefs have three.

Added together, the sixteen clubs will cover 260,748 km between them — about 6.5 laps of the equator — at an average of 16,297 km per club.

Why the Fixture List Does Not Matter Here

A point worth making up front, because it is the thing that makes this calculation solid rather than speculative.

The Betway Premiership is a double round-robin: sixteen clubs, thirty matchdays, every club playing every other club once at home and once away. That means the set of away trips each club makes is completely determined by the league membership. Stellenbosch will travel to the other fifteen grounds exactly once, whatever order the fixture computer puts them in.

So the season total does not depend on the fixture list at all — only on where the sixteen home grounds are. The fixture list would change one thing: whether a club can chain two away trips into a single journey instead of returning home between them. We deliberately do not model that, and we say so in the limits below. Every figure here assumes a club travels out to a ground and back to its own base, which is the standard assumption and the only one we can apply consistently to all sixteen.

Where the Grounds Actually Are

The 2026/27 division is unusually clustered. Three metropolitan blocks hold ten of the sixteen clubs, and one club sits 800 km from the nearest rival.

Three pairs of clubs will share a home site this season, which is a fact worth stating plainly because it produces away "trips" of essentially zero:

• Marumo Gallants and Siwelele both play at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. Their two meetings are a walk down the corridor.
• Milford and Richards Bay both play at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. Wikipedia's season table lists Milford at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu; Milford's own club website says uMhlathuze Sports Complex, and we have gone with the club's own statement. Richards Bay Stadium is, per its own record, part of that complex.
• Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United are 387 m apart in Polokwane — Old Peter Mokaba Stadium and Peter Mokaba Stadium respectively, neighbouring grounds on the same site.

And the shortest genuinely competitive trip in the league: Kaizer Chiefs to Orlando Pirates, 5.9 km — FNB Stadium to Orlando Stadium, across Soweto.

The Coordinate Table

Published in full, because the arithmetic is worthless if you cannot see the inputs. Coordinates are the venue's own recorded position, to six decimal places, with the source named for each.

Three checks against known distances, so you can see the formula behaves: FNB Stadium to Moses Mabhida is 499 km (Johannesburg–Durban), FNB Stadium to Danie Craven is 1,224 km (Johannesburg–Cape Town, and Stellenbosch is slightly nearer than the city), and Loftus Versfeld to FNB Stadium is 58.7 km (Pretoria–Soweto). All three land where they should.

The One Club We Could Not Pin Down

Chippa United split their home fixtures across two cities last season, and that is a real hole in any travel calculation, so here is exactly how we handled it.

Chippa's own website and Wikipedia both describe the arrangement the same way: most home games at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London, with night matches at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, 240 km away. Both venues were used in 2025/26 — the PSL's own match records show Chippa hosting Sekhukhune United at Buffalo City Stadium on 6 May 2026 and Golden Arrows at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium ten days later.

We have used Buffalo City Stadium as the base case, because that is the venue listed for Chippa in the 2026/27 season record and the one their own site names first. But we also ran the whole calculation again with Gqeberha as their home:

The choice moves Chippa's own number by 4,282 km — more than 20% — and shifts the league total by 3%. It does not touch the headline finding at all: Stellenbosch remain the outlier by an enormous margin either way. Anyone reusing the Chippa figure specifically should quote the scenario they mean.

What This Does and Does Not Measure

Great-circle kilometres are not road kilometres, and they are not flown kilometres. A great-circle distance is the shortest line between two points across the surface of the earth. Real journeys follow the N1, or route via O.R. Tambo. Road distance between South African cities typically runs 10–25% above the straight line, and air travel adds the leg to and from the airport. Every figure on this page is therefore a floor, and a consistent one — comparable between clubs, but not a fuel bill.

It is not a fatigue measurement either. A 1,500 km flight to Cape Town is a different physical proposition from a 700 km bus journey, and we make no attempt to convert distance into recovery cost. What we can say is that the exposure differs by a factor of nearly three across the division, and that this is structural: it is a consequence of where the sixteen clubs are, not of anything a coach can manage.

For the clubs at the top of the table, the geography compounds. Stellenbosch's fifteen away trips include four journeys of more than 1,375 km. Read alongside our altitude analysis — which found visiting sides give up roughly 0.30 points per game when they cross South Africa's altitude divide — the picture for a Western Cape club is a long trip and an altitude penalty at the end of it, fifteen times a season.

Are these road distances? No. They are great-circle distances — the straight line across the earth's surface between two stadium coordinates. Road journeys are typically 10–25% longer. We publish the coordinates and the full distance matrix so the figures can be recomputed on any other basis.

Does the fixture list change these numbers? Not the season totals. The league is a double round-robin, so every club visits every other ground exactly once regardless of the order. The fixture list would only matter for modelling chained away trips, which we do not do.
