The Cost of Attending a Match

Prices observed between February and July 2026. Ticket prices and taxi fares both move; every figure here is dated.

A general-admission ticket to an ordinary Betway Premiership match costs R60 to R80. Getting to the ground and home again costs R30 to R66. So one adult at one league match is R90 to R146 — between three and five hours of work at the national minimum wage.

Take a family of four and it is R300 to R444: between ten and fifteen hours of minimum-wage work, or 5.1% to 7.5% of an entire month's minimum wage, for ninety minutes of football.

The interesting finding is not that football is expensive. It is that the ticket is the cheap and stable part of the basket, and the journey is the part that has become expensive.

The Basket

Everything in this table is one adult ticket plus a return minibus taxi trip. What is in the basket, and what is not, is set out in full below — the basket is the method.

Against the formal-sector average wage the same baskets look modest — 0.3% to 1.5% of a month. Against the minimum wage they look very different. Both denominators are in the data file, and the gap between them is the point: which number you use decides whether South African football looks cheap or not.

The Ticket Is Cheap

The pattern is consistent across the four cities we could verify: an ordinary league match is R60, occasionally R80 for a bigger visitor. That is genuinely inexpensive live sport by any international comparison, and it is worth saying plainly rather than burying under the cost-of-living angle.

Derby pricing is a different product. The Soweto derby runs from R100 to R170 — roughly double to triple an ordinary league ticket — and the R50 parking charge is compulsory for anyone driving into the Nasrec precinct. A derby Level 2 seat plus parking is R220 before anyone has moved a metre or eaten anything.

The Journey Is What Got Expensive

This is the half of the basket that has moved, and it has moved hard.

Statistics South Africa recorded minibus taxi fares rising 11.5% in a single month between May and June 2026. Passenger transport prices rose 8.1% that month and were 12.5% higher than a year earlier. The driver was fuel: petrol cost 31.7% more than a year earlier and diesel 50.8% more.

SANTACO's May 2026 round of increases put local trips up by R2 to R6 and long-distance routes up by R10 to R30.

So a one-way urban trip in 2026 runs roughly R15 to R33, which is the range used throughout the basket above. And here is the consequence:

For a family of four, transport at the top of that range costs R264 against R180 in tickets. The journey costs more than the football. Even at the bottom of the range, transport is two-thirds of the ticket cost. A club can hold its ticket price at R60 for a decade and the cost of attending will still climb, because the expensive part is not the part the club controls.

That connects directly to our stadium accessibility analysis: the median distance from a major township to the nearest Premiership ground is 19.5 km, and four of Cape Town's largest townships have no ground closer than Stellenbosch. Distance is not an abstraction on a matchday budget — it is the fare.

What Is In the Basket, and What Is Not

In the basket:

• One general-admission adult ticket at the price the club or venue published, dated.
• A return minibus taxi trip per person, priced as twice a documented one-way urban fare, shown as a range rather than a point estimate.

Deliberately not in the basket:

• Food and drink inside the ground. We could not find a single published concession price list for a South African stadium, from any club, venue operator or caterer. Rather than estimate what a boerewors roll costs, we have left food out entirely and flagged it. Every total on this page is therefore a floor, not a full matchday cost.
• Merchandise, programmes and pre-match hospitality.
• Parking, except where it is shown explicitly as a separate R50 line for the derby. The basket assumes public transport.
• Anyone's actual route. The transport figure is a documented fare range, not a measured fare from a named township to a named stadium. We do not hold verified route-specific fares for journeys like Umlazi to Moses Mabhida or Khayelitsha to Stellenbosch, and we have not invented them.

The two income benchmarks, both from primary government sources:

• Average monthly earnings, R29,997 — Statistics South Africa's Quarterly Employment Statistics for February 2026, formal non-agricultural sector, including bonuses and overtime. This is a mean over people in formal employment, and it is well above what a typical South African earns. Published estimates of the median vary enormously, from about R7,000 to about R27,200 depending on the source and definition, so we have not used a median at all rather than pick one from sources that disagree by a factor of nearly four.
• National minimum wage, R30.23 per ordinary hour from 1 March 2026, up from R28.79 — gazetted 3 February 2026. A monthly equivalent of R5,894.85 follows from the Gazette's own convention of a 45-hour week over a 4.333-week month, i.e. 195 hours.

Because the average overstates typical income and the minimum wage is a legal floor rather than a typical wage, the honest reading is that the true burden for most South African football supporters sits between the two columns, and nearer the minimum-wage one.

Does this include food at the stadium? No, and that is a deliberate gap. No South African club or stadium operator publishes a concession price list that we could find, so rather than estimate we have excluded food and said so. Add your own figure to every total on this page.

Are these prices the same everywhere? We only verified ticket prices in four cities — Gqeberha, Pretoria, Durban and Johannesburg. Six Premiership venues, including Stellenbosch, Polokwane, Bloemfontein, Mbombela, East London and Richards Bay, publish prices we could not confirm, so they are absent from the table rather than assumed to match.
