This is a season-by-season record of South Africa's top division — the Premiership now played as the Betway Premiership — covering the last eleven completed seasons, 2015/16 to 2025/26. For each season the table above lists the champion, the runner-up and the Golden Boot winner with their league goals.
It is a reference page, not a tip sheet. The records are settled history, sourced and dated, and meant to be cited — by writers, forums and fans — rather than read as a guide to who will win next.
The Sundowns era — and the season it ended
The clearest story in the data is Mamelodi Sundowns. Across these eleven seasons Sundowns won the title nine times. The first exception was 2016/17, when Bidvest Wits took their sole league title and pushed Sundowns into second. From 2017/18 they then won eight in a row, the streak peaking with 2024/25's 73 points to Orlando Pirates' 61.
The second exception is the newest row in the table. In 2025/26, Orlando Pirates ended the run — their fifth league title and their first since 2011/12, won by a single point on 69 to Sundowns' 68. It is the tightest finish anywhere in this eleven-season record, and the only time in the table that the champion won with fewer than 70 points while the runner-up cleared 65.
The margin came from defence rather than attack. Pirates scored 58 to Sundowns' 57 — effectively level — but conceded 12 to Sundowns' 21. Nine goals across thirty matches, and one point in the table.
The runner-up column tells the supporting story. Orlando Pirates were the era's most frequent bridesmaids before finally converting, finishing second in 2017/18, 2018/19, 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 — five near-misses before the 2025/26 title. Kaizer Chiefs (2019/20), AmaZulu (2020/21) and Cape Town City (2021/22) each managed a single runner-up finish, while Wits and Sundowns swapped the top two places in 2015/16 and 2016/17. Sundowns' 2025/26 second place was their first non-title finish in nine seasons.
The Golden Boot race
The top-scorer column shows how little the Golden Boot tracks the title. Peter Shalulile is the standout — his 23 goals in 2021/22 is the highest single-season tally in this window, and he also shared the award in 2019/20 (as a Highlands Park player) and 2022/23. But several Golden Boots went to players outside the title race entirely: Mwape Musonda won it at Black Leopards in 2018/19, Bradley Grobler at SuperSport United in 2020/21, and Tshegofatso Mabasa at Orlando Pirates in 2023/24.
The 2025/26 award continued that pattern. Junior Dion of Lamontville Golden Arrows took the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot with 14 goals, playing for a mid-table side rather than either of the two clubs that went to the final matchday level on the title. Dion is only the second Golden Arrows player to win it, after Richard Henyekane in 2008/09.
Three of these eleven seasons ended with a shared Golden Boot — 2017/18 (Rodney Ramagalela and Percy Tau on 11), 2019/20 (Gabadinho Mhango and Shalulile on 16) and 2022/23 (Shalulile and Khanyisa Mayo on 12) — which is why the tally that wins the award has swung from a low of 11 to a high of 23. At 14 goals, the 2025/26 winning tally sits near the lower end of that range, in a season where the champions themselves scored only 58.

Every record on this page is cross-checked against published season records — primarily the season-by-season tables on Wikipedia and the dedicated Golden Boot record — and each season cites its source. Where a Golden Boot was shared, we list both winners and the shared tally. We do not publish a figure we could not verify: season-wide total-goals counts, for example, are left out rather than estimated. This page is near-static and is updated once per completed season.
