Bafana Bafana Squad Age Profile, 1996–2026

South Africa are picking more young players than they used to — and older squads than they used to. Both at once.

Across the four most recent squads, 18.0% of places went to players aged 22 or under, up from 12.2% in the 1996–2004 period. Over the same span the average squad age rose from 26.4 to 26.9. That is not a contradiction: the middle has been hollowed out. The 2026 World Cup squad contained seven players aged 22 or under and seven aged 30 or over, out of 26.

Every Squad, 1996–2026

Age is measured at each tournament's own start date, from each player's date of birth. "U23" means aged 22 or under — the standard reading of "under 23".

Across all 371 squad places the average age is 26.2, the median 26. Fifty-seven places — 15.4% — went to players aged 22 or under; 64 went to players of 30 or more.

Three Eras

The genuinely young era was the middle one. The 2008 Africa Cup of Nations squad, at an average of 24.2 with seven U23 players and only one over 30, is the youngest South Africa have taken to a tournament in thirty years. The 2006 squad was nearly as young. Neither is the era usually cited in the youth-development argument.

The current era looks young in one measure and old in the other, and that is the finding. Between 2019 and 2026 South Africa gave 18 squad places to players of 22 or under — proportionally the most of any era here — while also fielding the highest average age. The 2019 AFCON squad, with zero U23 players and an average of 27.9, sits inside the same period.

The Barbell

Put the two extremes side by side and the shape is obvious.

In the 2026 World Cup squad, 14 of 26 players were either 22 and under or 30 and over. Only twelve occupied the 23-to-29 band that is usually a squad's centre of gravity. Compare 2010, when 16 of 23 were in that band.

Two players make the point on their own: Themba Zwane was 36 at the 2026 World Cup and Mbekezeli Mbokazi was 20, and both were in the same squad. Zwane is the second-oldest outfield player South Africa have selected in this sample; only John Moshoeu, at 38 for the 2004 AFCON, was older.

At the other end, Aaron Mokoena was 17 at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations — the youngest squad place in the whole thirty-year record, and the start of a run that saw him named in six of these sixteen squads, more than anyone else.

What We Found in the Sources

This page publishes the errors it found, because a reader checking our arithmetic will hit them too.

Ninety-six of the 371 squad places belong to players who appear in more than one squad. That allows a check no single squad supports: re-derive each of those 241 ages from the player's date of birth and the tournament's own start date, and every one must agree. They do, with one exception — Brian Baloyi's age at the 2002 AFCON is recorded a year above what his date of birth gives.

More interesting are six players whose date of birth is not consistent between the articles they appear in:

• Sibusiso Zuma carries three different birth dates across his five squads.
• Brendan Augustine, Pierre Issa, Thulani Serero and Lyle Foster each carry two, and in every case the two look like a transposed day and month (26 October against 26 November; 11 April against 4 November; 9 May against 3 September).
• "Teboho Mokoena" is two different people. The Teboho Mokoena at St Gallen in the 2002 World Cup squad was born in 1974; the Teboho Mokoena at Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2023, 2025 and 2026 squads was born in 1997. They are counted as separate players here, which is correct, but a name-matched dataset would merge them.

None of this moves a headline. One player's age changing by a year shifts a 22-man squad's average by 0.045 years, and no ranking in the table above turns on less than 0.3. We list them because the alternative is that someone else finds them and wonders what else we did not check.

What This Does Not Measure

Squad places, not minutes. A 20-year-old who never leaves the bench and a 20-year-old who plays every match count the same here. The original brief for this page asked for U23 minutes by club, which would answer the youth-development question far better — and that data does not exist in any complete, verifiable public form for South African club football. Rather than estimate it, we have measured what can be measured: who gets picked.

For the one squad where minutes are fully documented, our World Cup minutes by club page counts every one of them from FIFA's own line-up sheets. It shows the gap this page cannot: at the 2026 World Cup, the four players who were ever-present included a 20-year-old and a 34-year-old, and seven squad members never played at all.

Who is the oldest? John Moshoeu, aged 38 at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. Themba Zwane at 36 in the 2026 World Cup squad and André Arendse at 36 in 2004 are next.

Does this count every South Africa squad? No. It counts final squads at the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations only — the tournaments with complete, comparable squad lists carrying dates of birth. Friendlies, qualifiers and tournaments South Africa did not reach are not in the sample.
