Bafana Bafana World Cup Minutes by Club

A closed dataset. South Africa played four matches at the 2026 World Cup, and this page will not change unless FIFA revises a line-up sheet.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates each put eight players in Bafana Bafana's 26-man World Cup squad. Each club is owed roughly the same release fee. But Sundowns' players spent 1,637 minutes on the pitch in Mexico and the United States, and Pirates' players spent 1,026 — a 60% gap on identical squad numbers.

Squad places are the number everybody counted. Minutes are the number nobody did. They tell a different story, and this page is the second half of the answer to "who supplies the national team".

Minutes by Club

South Africa played 3,913 team-minutes across four matches. Here is where every one of them came from.

Betway Premiership clubs supplied 2,663 minutes — 68.1% of everything South Africa played. Overseas clubs supplied 1,250, or 31.9%. That is a domestic-league share most national teams at this tournament could not come close to, and it is the headline finding of this page.

But it is concentrated almost to the point of being a two-club story. Sundowns and Pirates between them account for 2,663 minutes — every single Betway Premiership minute at the tournament. The other three represented South African clubs contributed none at all.

The Gap That Money Does Not See

This is the finding worth the most attention, and it only appears when you put this page next to our FIFA Club Benefits breakdown.

FIFA's release payments follow squad inclusion and days released — not minutes, not performance. Sundowns released eight players. Pirates released eight players. Both are therefore owed roughly the same amount, about R25.2 million each.

On the pitch, those two identical contributions were nothing like equal:

Sundowns had three players who were close to ever-present — Ronwen Williams and Khuliso Mudau played all 360 minutes, Aubrey Modiba played 346. Pirates' most-used player, Thalente Mbatha, finished on 258. Pirates spread their contribution across more squad players in smaller quantities; Sundowns supplied the spine of the team.

Neither club did anything wrong, and neither figure is a judgement on either club. The point is narrower and more useful than that: squad-place counts and release money are a measure of depth, not of influence. If you want to know which club actually held the national team together for four matches, you have to count minutes, and the two answers diverge by 60%.

Every Player, Every Minute

Minutes are counted on the standard convention: a full match is 90, a player substituted off in the 76th minute is credited with 76, a player brought on in the 76th is credited with 14, and stoppage time is excluded. Red cards end a player's match at the minute shown.

Seven of the 26 never played a minute: Chaine, Ndamane, Cross, Matuludi, Goss, Kubini and Makhanya. Each still earned his club the same release payment as Williams or Mudau, because that is how the programme is designed.

Four players were ever-present at 360 minutes — and two of them, Ime Okon and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, are based abroad. Hugo Broos built his back line around one Sundowns full-back and two overseas centre-backs, then filled the rest of the team from the Betway Premiership.

The Four Matches

The opener is the only match that does not total 990, and the reason is the reason South Africa lost it. Sphephelo Sithole was sent off in the 49th minute and substitute Themba Zwane was sent off later in the same game, so Bafana finished with nine men and 47 team-minutes short of a full eleven. Mexico also finished a man down, captain César Montes being dismissed in the 92nd minute.

That opening defeat cost Bafana more than the result. Teboho Mokoena collected a yellow card in each of the first two matches and was suspended for the Korea Republic game — the only match of the four he missed, and the one South Africa won. Zwane's red card ended his tournament after 23 minutes.

South Africa then reached the knockout rounds for the first time in their history, beating Korea Republic 1–0 through Thapelo Maseko's 63rd-minute strike, before going out to Stephen Eustáquio's stoppage-time goal for Canada in Los Angeles.

How We Checked It

Every figure here comes from FIFA's own tactical line-up sheet for each match — the document that records the starting eleven, every substitution with its minute, and every card. We did not use aggregator sites, and we did not reconstruct any line-up from a match report.

The check that matters: each match's minutes must add up to eleven players × 90, less any time lost to a red card. All four reconcile exactly.

• Czechia, Korea Republic and Canada: 990 each, which is 11 × 90 with no dismissals.
• Mexico: 943. Sithole's dismissal on 49 minutes costs 41; Zwane, on as a substitute in the 61st and dismissed in the 84th, costs a further 6. 990 − 47 = 943.

If a line-up sheet had been misread, that arithmetic would not close. It does, in all four matches, which is the strongest validation available for a dataset this size.

How many World Cup minutes came from Betway Premiership clubs? 2,663 of 3,913, or 68.1%. All of them came from just two clubs, Sundowns and Pirates. The other three Premiership clubs with a player in the squad — Kaizer Chiefs, Polokwane City and Siwelele — recorded no minutes at all.

Sundowns and Pirates both had eight players in the squad. Why the big minutes gap? Because squad size and playing time are different things. Sundowns supplied three near-ever-present starters (Williams and Mudau on 360 minutes each, Modiba on 346); Pirates' most-used player reached 258. Pirates contributed more players in smaller doses.

Which Bafana players played every minute? Four: Ronwen Williams and Khuliso Mudau of Mamelodi Sundowns, Ime Okon of Hannover 96 and Mbekezeli Mbokazi of Chicago Fire. All four played 360 of a possible 360 minutes.

How many squad members did not play at all? Seven of the 26: Sipho Chaine, Khulumani Ndamane, Bradley Cross, Thabang Matuludi, Ricardo Goss, Samukele Kubini and Olwethu Makhanya.
