A club's home advantage is not a fixed club property. Across four validated seasons and 930 matches, seven of the ten clubs that played all four were worse at home than away in at least one of them — including both Soweto giants and the champions. Every club's home and away record, split by season, with the source reconciliation published in full.

A club's home advantage is not a fixed club property. Across four seasons, seven of the ten clubs that played all four were worse at home than away in at least one of them.
That is the finding this page exists for, and it is the opposite of how home form is normally described. "Fortress" reputations are built on single seasons. Split the same clubs by season and most of them cross zero at least once.
We examined five seasons and publish four. The fifth is excluded, and the reason is set out in full below rather than buried — the published source for 2021/22 fails its own arithmetic.
This page is the club-level, season-by-season half of the question. The league-level answer — how big home advantage is in aggregate, and how much of it is altitude — is measured on our PSL altitude advantage page across the same 930 matches, and is not restated here.
Points per game at home minus points per game away, by season, for the ten clubs present in all four seasons. Positive means better at home.
| Club | 2022/23 | 2023/24 | 2024/25 | 2025/26 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AmaZulu | +0.33 | +0.53 | +0.50 | +0.47 |
| Chippa United | −0.13 | +0.40 | +0.79 | +0.40 |
| Golden Arrows | +0.13 | −0.40 | +0.21 | +0.73 |
| Kaizer Chiefs | −0.13 | +0.67 | +0.43 | −0.27 |
| Mamelodi Sundowns | +0.40 | −0.07 | +0.79 | +0.67 |
| Orlando Pirates | +0.13 | +0.67 | +0.21 | −0.20 |
| Richards Bay | −0.33 | +0.80 | +0.79 | +0.80 |
| Sekhukhune United | +1.20 | +0.07 | +0.14 | 0.00 |
| Stellenbosch | +0.67 | 0.00 | −0.14 | +0.33 |
| TS Galaxy | +0.07 | +1.47 | +0.64 | +0.67 |
Only two of the ten — AmaZulu and TS Galaxy — were better at home than away in all four seasons. Seven of the other eight went negative at least once, including both Soweto giants and the champions; Sekhukhune United avoided that only because their 2025/26 finished exactly level.
The swings are large. Sekhukhune United had the biggest home advantage in the league in 2022/23 at +1.20 points per game, then averaged +0.07 over the next three. TS Galaxy went the other way: +0.07, then +1.47. Richards Bay opened at −0.33 and have been above +0.79 in every season since.
A single season of club home form, in other words, predicts the next one weakly at best. Treat any one-season "fortress" claim about a PSL club — including ones drawn from this dataset — with that in mind.
Aggregated over the four seasons, per match, for the same ten ever-present clubs. "Scoring drop" is home goals per match minus away goals per match. "Conceding rise" is away goals against per match minus home goals against per match.
| Club | Home scored | Away scored | Home conceded | Away conceded | Scoring drop | Conceding rise |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mamelodi Sundowns | 2.31 | 1.53 | 0.46 | 0.53 | 0.78 | 0.07 |
| TS Galaxy | 1.29 | 0.73 | 0.83 | 1.12 | 0.56 | 0.29 |
| AmaZulu | 1.15 | 0.78 | 0.98 | 1.14 | 0.37 | 0.15 |
| Stellenbosch | 1.32 | 1.02 | 0.93 | 0.98 | 0.31 | 0.05 |

| Sekhukhune United | 1.15 | 0.98 | 0.83 | 1.02 | 0.17 | 0.19 |
| Chippa United | 0.92 | 0.80 | 1.08 | 1.37 | 0.12 | 0.29 |
| Golden Arrows | 1.02 | 1.00 | 0.98 | 1.54 | 0.02 | 0.56 |
Two clubs sit at opposite ends of the same question.
Golden Arrows score the same wherever they play — 1.02 goals per home match against 1.00 away, a difference of one goal in fifty matches. Their entire home advantage is defensive: they concede 0.98 at home and 1.54 away. Whatever travelling costs Golden Arrows, it is not their attack.
Kaizer Chiefs are the mirror image. They concede exactly the same home and away, 0.97 per match in both. Their small home edge is purely a scoring effect, and a modest one.
Mamelodi Sundowns have the largest scoring drop in the league — 0.78 goals per match — while conceding almost identically home and away. They are close to unbeatable in both places; they are simply far more destructive at home.
All clubs with at least one full season in the window. Clubs marked with a dagger played fewer than four seasons, so their figures rest on a smaller sample and should not be ranked against the ever-present ten.

Orbit College are the only club in the window with no home advantage at all — an identical 3-3-9 home and away in their single season, to the point where their points per game match to two decimals. It is one season and it should be read as a curiosity rather than a finding, but it is a real one.
At the other end of the ever-present group, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have the two smallest home advantages among clubs with four full seasons, at +0.17 and +0.20. Both play in front of the largest crowds in the country.
The brief for this page asked for five seasons. We publish four, because the fifth does not survive checking — and we would rather show the check than quietly drop a season.
Every season here was tested the same way: rebuild each club's record from the itemised match grid, then compare it against the league table published in the same source article. The two are maintained separately, so agreement is a real test.
| Season | Clubs | Matches with a score | Clubs whose W/D/L agree | Clubs whose goals agree | Published here |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021/22 | 16 | 238 | 10 of 16 | 10 of 16 | No |
| 2022/23 | 16 | 240 | 16 of 16 | 16 of 16 | Yes |
| 2023/24 | 16 | 240 | 16 of 16 | 8 of 16 | Results only |
| 2024/25 | 15 | 210 | 15 of 15 | 15 of 15 | Yes |
| 2025/26 | 16 | 240 | 16 of 16 | 16 of 16 | Yes |
2021/22 fails on results for six of sixteen clubs, and two fixtures — Stellenbosch against Royal AM and against Sekhukhune United — were never filled in at all, leaving a date placeholder where the score should be.
It also fails a test that needs no comparison. The published 2021/22 table gives 480 goals for and 478 goals against. Every goal scored by someone is conceded by someone else, so those two totals must be identical in any real league season. They are not, so at least one row is wrong independently of anything we computed. The other four seasons all pass this test exactly.
This corroborates, by a different route, the note already on our altitude advantage page that 2021/22 could not be reconciled. Two separate checks, two years apart, land on the same season.
2023/24 is a partial case and is handled as one. All sixteen clubs' wins, draws and losses reconcile exactly — so every result-based column above is sound. Seven clubs' goal totals differ from the published table by one to three goals. We publish the results columns for that season and treat its goal columns as unverified; the aggregated goal table above is dominated by the three fully reconciled seasons but does include 2023/24, and no ranking in it turns on a margin that small.
2024/25 is complete despite showing 210 matches. Royal AM were suspended and their thirty fixtures were voided; the published table excludes them and so do we. Fifteen clubs playing each other twice is exactly 210 matches, and all fifteen reconcile.
Home advantage here is a description, not an explanation. It bundles together crowd, travel, altitude, pitch, familiarity and referee effects, and this page separates none of them. The altitude component specifically is isolated on the altitude advantage page; the travel component is quantified on PSL travel load.
Nor does it account for schedule. A club whose home fixtures happened to fall against weaker opponents will look stronger at home for reasons that have nothing to do with playing at home. Over a full double round-robin every club hosts every other club exactly once, which removes this entirely across a whole season — but not within the sub-samples of clubs that played fewer than four seasons here.
Which PSL club has the biggest home advantage?
Among clubs present for all four seasons, TS Galaxy, at +0.71 points per game more at home than away. Over the whole table Siwelele show +1.13, but from a single season of thirty matches.
Do Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have a strong home record?
They have strong home records and small home advantages — the two are different things. Both are among the better home sides in absolute terms, but both are nearly as good away, which is what makes their advantage the smallest of the ever-present clubs at +0.17 and +0.20 points per game.
How many seasons does this cover?
Four: 2022/23, 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26, totalling 930 matches. A fifth, 2021/22, was examined and excluded because the published source does not reconcile with itself.
Is club home advantage predictable from one season to the next?
On this evidence, weakly. Seven of the ten clubs that played all four seasons recorded a negative home advantage in at least one of them, and the largest single-season figures in the dataset — Sekhukhune United's +1.20 and TS Galaxy's +1.47 — were both followed by ordinary ones.
Period covered: Four South African Premiership seasons — 2022/23, 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 — comprising 930 matches and 63 club-seasons. A fifth season, 2021/22, was examined and excluded.

The league-level answer to the same question — how big home advantage is in aggregate, and how much of it is altitude — is measured across these same 930 matches on our PSL altitude advantage page. For how far each club travels to earn those away records, see PSL travel load. For the fixture that defies the pattern, see the Soweto derby database and the other derbies.
