The Rugby Championship is the southern hemisphere's flagship Test tournament — South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina in a four-team competition that has produced some of the most bet-on rugby matches in this country's history. The Springboks are the competition's form team, having won it in 2024 and 2025 back-to-back. But 2026 is different: the tournament is not being played this year, and any bettor who doesn't understand why (and what replaces it) is going to be confused by their sportsbook's rugby lobby. Why There's No Rugby Championship in 2026
SANZAAR’s announced calendar sets aside August–September for international tours in 2026 and 2030. The Rugby Championship is scheduled for 2027, 2028 and 2029. Separately, the Nations Championship uses the July and November windows.
For South African readers, the practical distinctions are:
- Not every Springbok Test is a Nations Championship match. The 2026 All Blacks series and the September Test against Australia are separate. See the dated calendar in our Springboks guide for completed events and the next scheduled fixture.
- A full Rugby Championship is planned for 2027. SANZAAR describes it as the first full edition in a Rugby World Cup year. That does not mean the tournament has never been played in a World Cup year. The announcement does not establish a shortened edition or a July–August fixture list; check the edition-specific schedule before relying on dates or venues.
- Betting markets need a separate check. This calendar announcement does not establish when a bookmaker will open outright markets or which selections it will offer. Read the market’s competition name and settlement terms before staking.
How the Rugby Championship Works
The published senior format page describes the 2022–2025 mini-tour arrangement: each team plays six matches, three at home and three away. Teams meet each opponent twice, but those two meetings are not necessarily split between home and away. Hosting arrangements rotate.
Its senior competition points are four for a win, two for a draw, one bonus for scoring at least three more tries than the opponent, and one bonus for losing by seven points or fewer. Scoring four tries alone does not secure the senior try bonus: for example, four tries to two is only a two-try advantage. The same source has a separate Under-20 section with different try-bonus wording; do not apply it to the senior tournament.
These are the published reference rules, not a claim that the detailed 2027 regulations have already been verified. Competition-table points also differ from the bookmaker’s handicap and payout rules.
What makes it distinctive as a betting product:
- Every fixture is a heavyweight Test. There are no minnows. Even the "weakest" match on paper — say Australia at home to Argentina — is genuinely competitive, which keeps 1X2 prices honest and playable in a way Springbok-vs-tier-two friendlies never are.
- Travel is extreme. Johannesburg to Buenos Aires to Sydney is the most brutal away schedule in world rugby. Teams in the middle of a long away swing consistently underperform their ranking — the single most reliable angle in Rugby Championship betting.
- Altitude returns every year. At least one Springbok home Test usually lands on the highveld, where visiting sides fade late. New Zealand at Ellis Park is the classic case: tight for an hour, then the handicap decides it in the last 20 minutes.
The Springboks' Record — and How the Market Prices It
South Africa enter any future edition as the team to beat: champions in 2024 and 2025, world champions since 2019, with squad depth no rival matches. Three consequences for your betting:
- Short outright prices. The Boks will head most outright markets. Whether that price is value depends on schedule (where are their away Tests?) and on how much rotation a World Cup year forces.
- The All Blacks rivalry is its own market. Springboks–New Zealand is the biggest betting event in South African rugby regardless of venue or table position. The public backs the Boks heavily and emotionally, which historically nudges the line a point or two — sharp bettors treat the All Blacks' price in these fixtures as slightly inflated value more often than not.
- Handicaps over match results. As with every strong favourite, the win line on Bok fixtures against Australia and Argentina is usually too short. Margin and handicap markets are where the tournament rewards genuine reads.

Angles That Actually Pay
- Fade the traveller. The away swing is the tournament's defining handicap angle. A side playing its second consecutive Test on the road, across time zones, underperforms its true strength.
- Respect Argentina at home. Los Pumas in Buenos Aires or Mendoza are a different proposition from Los Pumas on tour — they beat every one of the big three at home in recent cycles, usually at generous prices.
- Watch the World Cup shadow in 2027. Coaches will manage minutes and experiment with combinations. A weakened team sheet on a Wednesday changes everything you thought about Saturday's line — bet after selection, never before.
- Conditions call the totals. Highveld Tests in dry winter air push totals up late; coastal and wet-weather Tests, with the Boks' kicking game in charge, lean under.
- Read the correct bonus rule. Under the published senior rules, the try bonus depends on the difference between the teams’ try totals; a fourth try alone is not enough. A losing bonus applies within seven points. Neither rule guarantees how a team will play or how an in-play price will move.
